What Columbia is really asking

Columbia wants to know if you understand what sets it apart from every other school in a big city: the Core Curriculum, the set of required seminars every student takes. The real question is whether you know what you are signing up for and want it anyway.

The mistake most applicants make

Writing about New York. Nearly every applicant does, and the city is not a reason to choose Columbia over any other school in Manhattan. The next most common mistake is praising the reputation or the faculty in general terms that would fit any school.

Do this instead

Name one Core class, one specific course, professor, or lab in your intended field, and one thing about the Core that will challenge you and why you want it anyway. Tie each one to something you already do. At 150 words, two or three specifics are plenty.

Lines that get skimmed vs. lines that get remembered

These example lines are written by AlphaApply.ai to show the difference. Do not copy them. The remembered versions work because they are specific to one person, and yours has to be specific to you.

Example 1 · gets skimmedI have always dreamed of living in New York, the greatest city in the world.

The most common opener there is. It says nothing about Columbia or about you.

Gets rememberedI want the Core to make me argue with Plato before I am allowed to agree with him.

Names the Core and shows you know what it will demand of you.

Example 2 · gets skimmedColumbia's world-class faculty and prestigious reputation drew me in.

True of every school on your list. Swap the name and it still works, which is the problem.

Gets rememberedIn Frontiers of Science, I want to finally learn why I still cannot explain entropy to my little brother.

A real required course, plus a real gap you want it to fill.

Example 3 · gets skimmedColumbia is the perfect fit for me.

A conclusion with no evidence. Readers want the reason, not the verdict.

Gets rememberedLit Hum will assign books I would never pick for myself. That is exactly why I want it.

Admits the tradeoff of the Core and chooses it anyway. That reads as real fit.
