Through our intentionally interdisciplinary curriculum and our mission to develop "a clear understanding of the impact of their work," Mudders develop the skills needed to address these complex challenges and contribute meaningfully to society. Share how an experience you've had or community you belong to has shaped the kinds of problems you want to solve and the impact you want to make.

   What they are really asking: Where did your problems come from, and are they yours?

   The mistake most applicants make: Choosing a big global problem with no personal origin. They ask about an experience or community for a reason.

   Do this instead: Start with the community or experience, show the specific problem you saw in it, then the kind of work you want to do because of it. The chain from your life to the problem is the whole essay.

2. No one succeeds alone, and at Harvey Mudd College, no one expects you to. In and out of the classroom, HMC students are encouraged to embrace challenges, collaborate with one another, and ask for support when they need it. Describe a time when asking for help made a difference in your work or wellbeing. What led you to reach out, and what did you take away from the experience?

   What they are really asking: Can you ask for help, and are you honest about when you needed it?

   The mistake most applicants make: Describing a time you helped someone else, or a time you asked for help but did not really need it.

   Do this instead: One real moment when you were stuck or struggling and reached out. Who, what you said, what changed. Say plainly what it taught you about how you work.
