“Tell us your story. What unique opportunities or challenges have you experienced throughout your high school career that have shaped who you are today?”

What Texas A&M is really asking
Can you tell one story that explains who you are, with the opportunities and challenges in it?
The mistake most applicants make
Writing a chronological summary of high school. 750 words of timeline puts a reader to sleep.
Do this instead
Pick the two or three experiences that actually shaped you and connect them with one thread. Open in a scene, not with your birth. Let the reader see how one experience led to the next.
How to spend 750 words
750 words is a full short essay. Build it around one story with a clear turn, use real names and details, and let the reflection grow out of the story instead of being announced at the end.
How to start
Jim starts by asking you: “What is the experience that, if someone knew about it, would explain most of the other things you do?” Answer it with Jim, free →
