University of California-Merced's supplemental essay 9 of 12 for the 2026-2027 application: the prompt, the limit, when it is due, and how to answer it. Verified on August 7, 2026.
“Think about an academic subject that inspires you. Describe how you have furthered this interest inside and/or outside of the classroom.”
Limit: 350 words. Deadlines: Regular Decision: November 30, 2026.
What UC Merced is really asking
Have you chased a subject beyond the classroom, and how far?
The mistake most applicants make
Saying you love the subject and listing your grade in it.
Do this instead
One subject, and two or three things you did because of it that nobody required: a project, a competition, reading, a job. Show the progression.
How to spend 350 words
350 words leaves room for a scene and a reflection. Open inside the moment rather than before it, spend most of the words on what happened and what you noticed, and keep the "what it means" to the final third.
