What UC San Diego is really asking
What did you do about it? Not what happened to you.
The mistake most applicants make
Spending the essay on the challenge and one sentence on the response.
Do this instead
Two sentences on the challenge, the rest on the steps you took and how your grades, activities, or outlook changed. Be specific about what you did on a bad day.
How to spend 350 words
350 words leaves room for a scene and a reflection. Open inside the moment rather than before it, spend most of the words on what happened and what you noticed, and keep the "what it means" to the final third.
How to start
