What University of Washington is really asking
Who are you beyond your grades and your list of activities?
The mistake most applicants make
Writing about an achievement the activities list already covers. UW reads the essay for the person, not the resume.
Do this instead
Use the Common App essay to show one story that explains why you do what you do. Pick a moment, not a summary. If the rest of your application is science, show the human. If it is all leadership, show the quiet part.
How to spend 650 words
650 words is a full short essay. Build it around one story with a clear turn, use real names and details, and let the reflection grow out of the story instead of being announced at the end.
