Describe a time when you engaged others in meaningful dialogue around an issue that was important to you. Did this exchange create change, new perspectives, or deeper relationships?”
Limit: 500 words (optional). Deadlines: Early Decision: November 1, 2026. Early Decision II: January 5, 2027. Regular Decision: January 5, 2027.
What GWU is really asking
Do you have a stake in the world beyond yourself, and have you already acted on it?
The mistake most applicants make
Choosing the 'change history' prompt and writing a speech about world peace with no personal connection.
Do this instead
The dialogue prompt is usually the stronger pick, because it asks for something you did. Choose a real conversation about something you cared about, with a real person who disagreed. Show what you said, what they said, and what changed after. If you pick the history prompt, make the change local and connect it to something you have already tried.
How to spend 500 words
500 words is a full short essay. Build it around one story with a clear turn, use real names and details, and let the reflection grow out of the story instead of being announced at the end.
