What UT Austin is really asking
Have you actually done computer science, or just liked the idea of it?
The mistake most applicants make
Listing every coding club and course with no depth. CS admissions at UT is brutal, and they want proof of real work.
Do this instead
Two or three things in detail: a project with a real problem, what you built, what broke, what you learned. Then goals that follow from that work. Connect a non-CS experience if it shaped how you think about problems.
How to spend 500 words
500 words is a full short essay. Build it around one story with a clear turn, use real names and details, and let the reflection grow out of the story instead of being announced at the end.
How to start
Jim starts by asking you: “What is the most complicated thing you have built, and what went wrong the first time?” Answer it with Jim, free →
