What November 1 means at each school

The date is the same, the commitment is not. Early Decision is a contract: if admitted, you withdraw every other application and enroll. Early Action gives you a decision in December with no obligation, and you can apply EA to as many schools as allow it. Restrictive Early Action, used by Princeton, Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Caltech, Notre Dame, is also non-binding but limits where else you may apply early, usually to public universities and non-binding rounds elsewhere. Read the policy on the school's page before you file, because a second early application can void the first.

Most schools count the deadline as 11:59 p.m. in their own time zone on the day listed, and most accept recommendation letters and test scores that arrive a few days later as long as your part is submitted. Fee waivers, the counselor report, and the Common App itself all need to be done by you, so finish those first. If an essay is still rough on October 31, a submitted rough draft beats a missed deadline at a school that has no later round.

Questions students ask

Is November 1 a hard deadline?

For your submitted application, yes. Most schools accept the counselor report, recommendation letters, and official test scores a few days after the deadline, but the Common App and the fee or waiver must be in by the date listed, usually 11:59 p.m. in the school's time zone.

Can I apply to more than one college on November 1?

You can apply Early Action to as many schools as you like, plus one Early Decision school. Restrictive Early Action schools limit where else you may apply early, so check that policy before you add a second early application.

What happens if I miss the November 1 deadline?

Most of these schools have a Regular Decision round in early January, and many have Early Decision II in January. Only the early round is gone; the application is not.
