Rutgers Supplemental Essay Prompts 2026-2027
Under each prompt: what it is really asking, the mistake most applicants make, and the first question Jim asks you so the essay comes from your story, not a template.
- Rutgers requires an original essay on the standard personal statement topics (background/identity, challenge or setback, questioned belief, gratitude, personal growth, engaging idea, or any topic of your choice).
650 wordsWhat they are really asking: Who are you, told in one story that only you could tell?
The mistake most applicants make: Writing about the biggest thing that happened to you instead of the thing that reveals you. A tournament win tells them less than a Tuesday at your job.
Do this instead: Choose one experience that explains why you do what you do, and let it connect the dots between the activities on your list. Open in a scene, keep the reflection short, and end somewhere different from where you began.
Jim starts by asking you: “What is the story behind why you chose the activities you spend the most time on?” Answer it with Jim, free →
